Je staat nietsvermoedend in een café en BAM!, uit het niets begint er een voorstelling. Een rapper klimt op de bar en begint te rappen, dansers springen op je tafeltje, de barman zet een aria in en naast je begint een acteur hartverscheurend te huilen. Voor velen is het Café Theater Festival een eerste kennismaking met theater, zo dicht op de huid dat het niemand onberoerd laat.

Op vrijdag 28 en zaterdag 29 maart nemen Walhalla en het CTF samen Rotterdam over voor het Café Theater Festival Rotterdam. Vijftien horecazaken in Rotterdam (waarond Foyer Cafe Walhalla) vormen op deze dagen het decor van korte voorstellingen van makers uit verschillende disciplines.

Het CTF is al ruim 20 jaar een begrip in Utrecht, en al 4 jaar in Rotterdam en Arnhem. Het concept is eigenlijk heel simpel: in het café plaatsen we voorstellingen van nieuwe theater- en dansmakers. Zonder podium, decor of aankondiging begint de voorstelling. Het publiek, een mix van toevallige cafébezoekers en festivalpubliek, hoeft niet vooraf een kaartje te kopen maar betaalt achteraf middels een Pay What You Can systeem.

Innocently sipping your cappuccino in a café, and BAM! Out of the blue, a performance kicks off. A rapper leaps onto the bar and starts spitting rhymes, dancers hop onto your table, the bartender belts out an aria, and next to you, an actor sobs dramatically. For many, the Café Theater Festival is an introduction to theater, so up close and personal that it leaves no one untouched.

On Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th of March, Walhalla and the CTF will take over Rotterdam for the Café Theater Festival. Fifteen venues in Rotterdam (including Foyer Cafe Walhalla) will serve as the backdrop for short performances by creators from various disciplines.

The CTF has been a staple in Utrecht for over 20 years, and now for 4 years in Rotterdam and Arnhem too. The concept is delightfully simple: we stage performances by new makers in cafés. Without a stage, set, or announcement, the show begins. The audience, a mix of unsuspecting café-goers and festival attendees, doesn’t need to buy a ticket in advance but pays afterward through a Pay What You Can system.
